What Makes This Recipe Great?
I am of the firm belief that a good margarita is the best cocktail you can drink. If you are used to restaurant margaritas filled with sweet and sour mix, it’s time to experience a way better marg! The mix that is in most margaritas not only doesn’t taste very good but it always is loaded with sugar that will give you a terrible headache the next day. This recipe uses lime juice for the sour and honey syrup for the sweet! Honey Syrup is a simple mixture of honey and water for a refined sugar free option that adds the perfect flavor and sweetness to this healthy margarita. Then you add in tequila and cointreau to round out the cocktail and top with club soda. We have a soda stream at home and use that sparkling water to top our drinks. Once you make this healthy margarita you won’t look back!
Ingredient Information
- tequila – i prefer a blanco tequila
- lime juice – fresh squeezed is great but the santa cruz organics bottles of lime juice are great when making a big batch
- honey
- club soda – basically just any sparkling water works!
- tajin – an optional add on for the rim
Step by Step Instructions
- If you want to add a tajin rim to your glass, do that first! Just rub a slice of lime around the rim and add tajin to a plate. Then dip the rim into the tajin and it will stick!
- Then grab a cocktail shaker and fill it half way with ice.
- Add in the tequila, lime, honey syrup and cointreau and shake vigorously.
- Add ice to the tajin rimmed glasses and strain the mixture between the two glasses.
- Top each drink with club soda!
Pro Tips
- Cointreau can be left out – it adds some flavor, more booze and sweetness.
- I love topo chico sparkling water and santa cruz organics lime juice in this drink!
- A fun way to mix up this drink is to try out different flavored sparkling water like lime, pineapple, mango, etc.
- The Tajin rim is totally optional but amazing!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this be made into a mocktail?
- You can leave out the cointreau and replace tequila with water, then still shake together the water, lime and honey syrup!
What Makes this Healthy?
- Anything with alcohol isn’t inherently healthy but if you want a margarita, using honey and lime juice instead of the typical sweet and sour mix is much healthier as it is lower in sugar and not refined.
