Crispy Baked Lemon Garlic Chicken Wings
I’ll be honest, I rarely watch football. But I LOVE the super bowl. Not only for commercials but for the food!! I love testing out new appetizers and finger foods for this day and these chicken wings got me so excited. We just made this recipe last week but I knew I had to get it up ASAP because it’s not only football food, it’s just good food. When these came out of the oven, I shot them, then Catherine and I hovered over them and ate almost ALL OF THEM. Matt was working at the time so when he got home I made them again and he freaked a little too. They are so simple and not overwhelming with lemon garlic flavor, just a hint that makes your mouth water for more. I feel like every time I made chicken wings I think, why on earth don’t we eat these on a regular basis?? Especially when you can make them this crispy in the oven.
To bring the ultimate crisp factor, I used baking powder to coat them. I couldn’t call these paleo because most conventional baking powders have corn starch but they are easily gluten free as long as you find gluten free baking powder (like from Thrive Market!). I have also added in the instructions a way to make paleo baking powder if you need to stay grain free too, so no excuse to not make these! So try these bad boys out and enjoy your big game snacking – or weeknight dinner – like a champ.
SO CRISPY!
Carrots, celery and bell peppers are the perfect side to these!
You will need more then just wings to go with your party:

Ingredients
- 2 lbs chicken wings
- 2 tsp baking powder**
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp lemon zest
- Sauce:
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup ghee, melted
- Serve with: Celery, carrots, bell peppers & ranch dressing
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire cooling rack on top.
- Pat your chicken wings dry (the dryer they are, the crispy they will get!). Then place them in a large bowl.
- In a small bowl combine baking powder, ½ tsp salt, 2 tsp garlic powder and 1 Tbsp lemon zest and stir to combine.
- Pour the spice mixture over the wings and toss to coat evenly.
- Place the wings, spread out evenly, on the cooling rack and bake for 30 minutes, flip them all, then bake for another 20-30 minutes or until browned and crispy.
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl combine 1 tsp garlic powder, lemon juice, ¼ tsp salt, and ¼ cup melted ghee and stir to combine.
- Place cooked wings in a large bowl and add ghee mixture on top. Toss to coat the wings.
- Serve with veggies!
Notes
- **To make these paleo, make your own baking powder by combining 2 tablespoons cream of tartar, 1 tablespoon baking soda, and 1 tablespoon tapioca starch
- You can use butter instead of ghee.
The crunch on these wings was fantastic! Made the paleo baking powder and it worked fantastic. Will make again, but will add more lemon to the sauce to really give it a punch

That’s awesome!!
I’m planning to make this for the super bowl this weekend and I need to make them whole 30, is the baking powder that is paleo that also or how does that work? Thank you!
Yes you can do the paleo version for Whole30!!
Yum!! So good! My husband was raving about them and said to definitely keep the recipe. Making sure the wings are really dry before cooking is super important. I was lazy on measuring for the zest and lemon juice so it was basically the zest from a small lemon that I used and the juice from almost half the lemon. Will definitely make again!!! Pro tip: after cooking when you have the cooling rack that needs washing I flip it over so that it sits inside the baking sheet and fill it with some dish soap and hot water to let it soak and it makes it a breeze to clean!
★★★★★
Yes! Great tip!
I made these last night and they were amazing!!! Such great flavour. Will 100% be making again and will be the staple recipe I use for chicken wings!!! Cannot rave enough about how good these are!
★★★★★
That is great to hear!!
This looks delicious! Can you use frozen wings?
Yes, just let them thaw before cooking!
These were so delicious! Super crunchy and loved the flavor!

★★★★★
Amazing to hear!!
Since food shopping is an every other-ish week thing right now I bought a bunch of protein this last trip to Costco. When I saw the wings, this is the recipe I thought of and tossed em in my cart. Holy moly. The crunch. The sauce. Sooooo easy. I may or may not have taken a piece of bread and sopped up the leftover sauce from the bowl 😉 and really, next time we make garlic bread, I’m doing it with this sauce, because YUM. This will be on repeat.
★★★★★
That’s awesome to hear!!
So good!! Thanks for sharing.
★★★★★
Of course! 🙂
So, so good!!
★★★★★
Awesome!!
These are fantastic! I have added these into my rotation of chicken wing recipes I use. Wings are such an easy thing to make and so quick if you are in a time crunch. These work great in an airfryer too – I just shake the basket once or twice while cooking them. They turn out great every time! I cook them at 360 for 24ish minutes – always temp them since times vary depending on the thickness of the wings or the type of airfryer you are using. Can’t wait to make them again soon!!!
★★★★★
Awesome, thank you for that!!
YUM YUM YUM who couldn’t love these! So great!
★★★★★
These were good! Loved how crispy they got
★★★★★
The *ONLY* chicken wing recipe I make now!! Even my mostly vegetarian (lol) husband just LOVES these. They’re so easy to make, we make them when the mood strikes (no need for a big sporting event anymore) and are way better than any wings we’d get from takeout. 10/10 will make again (oh wait, we’ve already made them 3 times!!)
★★★★★
That is great!! They really are perfect for any occasion!
So good! This was my first time making wings. I had received some in a ButcherBox order and wasn’t sure what to do. My husband and I were both skeptical about homemade wings, but this recipe was perfect! Crispy and delicious wings!

Help! I accidentally used baking SODA instead of baking powder. Is it totally ruined?! Ha!
Oooo I have no idea I haven’t tried that!
It actually turned out ok! Super crispy and delicious, ha!
My boyfriend was in heaven with these wings. Our oven is out of commision so we made them in the airfryer and they turned out nice and crispy.
That is great!
Finally made these tonight and OHMMYYYY they are so freakin delicious!!! They are so crispy and the flavor is awesome! I love how 5 simple ingredients + chicken can make something so yummy!!!

Ah YES!!
Hey do you think it would be possible to use arrowroot instead of baking powder?
No they are not the same thing! I also share a paleo version of baking powder at the bottom of the post!
I just whipped these up for a wfh lunch bc i had some chicken wings I needed to use. This recipe is insane. Do not doubt the simplicity. They are easy to put together/simple ingredients that you typically have on hand. I did increase the lemon juice/zest a bit as I like things super lemony 🙂
★★★★★
Awesome!!
My husband legit thinks i’m lying when I tell him these are done in the oven. They are SOOOO GOOD. Great recipe, easy to follow and so crispy. We do ghee when we are on Whole30 and butter when we aren’t. Great both ways.
★★★★★
Haha I love it!!
So glad we found this recipe!! This is our go-to every time we make wings!

Sooo savory and delicious! I baked a little less than recommended as my wings were on the small side and I didn’t want to dry them out. Will definitely be making again!

★★★★★
Perfect substitute!!
These are so good!! I had a smaller number of wings and the recipe was super easy to scale down. I also tried a couple of other wing recipes I found online the same day and these were by far the best. Lemon and chicken were just born to be together. Thanks, Kelsey!!

Wonderful!
I’ve always been afraid of making chicken wings but knew I could trust Kelsey’s recipe. As always easy to follow and turned out BOMB!
